BAN Video: The Digital Dump
MOST E-WASTE RECYCLERS ARE NOT RECYCLERS AT ALL
Most companies want to dispose of their e-waste responsibly so they seek out an electronics recycler, or an IT asset recovery and disposition services provider. Unfortunately, all too often these e-waste recyclers are not recyclers at all. This eye-opening film summarizes the work of the Basel Action Network's (BAN) years of investigation into the dumping of electronic waste in developing countries, exposing the ugly underbelly of the computer recycling industry — and what really happens with the used electronics discarded by businesses today. The resulting trade in toxic wastes leaves the poorer people of the world with an untenable choice between poverty and poison — a choice that nobody should have to make. BAN has created the e-Steward initiative to solve this toxic crisis, introducing the first independently audited and accredited electronic waste recycler certification program forbidding the dumping of toxic e-waste in developing countries, local landfills and incinerators; the use of prison labor; and the unauthorized release of private data. BAN has qualified Redemtech as an E-Stewards Certified Recycler.
